Sometimes, one of the best ways to market yourself, is to not market yourself. If this sounds strange to you, then just think about it for a moment. People are bombarded with advertisements every day. Radio, TV, magazines, newspapers, direct mail, email, pop-ups. You get the picture. So it makes sense that people might enjoy finding out something without it being an advertisement. I have embarked on such an adventure.
When the local newspaper, the Newport Daily Express, recently hired a new publisher, that publisher really wanted to change the whole outlook of the paper. He revamped the sports pages, he revamped the editorial pages and he added a number of feature columnists. I was sitting next to him at a local high school basketball game when I brought up the idea of a mortgage column. I did not want to overkill the idea, so I suggested just a couple columns per month. And it would not be self-promoting, it would be informational. He liked the idea. And he asked if I might be interested in sponsoring an 'athlete of the week'. I liked the idea.
I had a message waiting for me when I came into work the next morning to cement the deal. He acted quickly. I acted quickly. And the column has been running for the past month. Area consumers will have someone local providing them with helpful and useful information. There is a reference to this blog and a telephone number for people to call with questions. I suspect that as the months go by, that this column will prove to be time well spent. And I am hoping the readers will feel the same way.
As a mortgage lender or Realtor, perhaps you could consider what I have done. It is still early in 2007, so one of your goals for this year can still be --writing a column.
