By the time you read this, I will be at summer camp. I may win the oldest camper award. It is a referee camp at UMass/Lowell which begins Friday, June 29th. Just like I want to get better as a Mortgage Officer, I want to get better as a basketball official. This is my second camp and this one will probably have even higher caliber teams to officiate than my last one. It is put on by IAABO [International Association of Approved Basketball Officials]. I have a goal to make at least one new friend which happens to be the same goal as when I go to a conference for business.
But I also have a goal to improve my game so that when next season rolls around, I will be even more confident of the game I am officiating. There is always something new to learn, whether it is positioning, knowing when to hold the whistle to see the whole play unfold, how to work with different partners, and how to diffuse difficult situations. Not much different than working through a difficult mortgage transaction.
I am sure that I will be fairly tired once the weekend comes to a close. But I also expect to have a sense of acomplishment. Much like when I complete a course as I continue my learning the mortgage business. Maybe you are not a sports official [maybe you should consider it though], but learning experiences come in many forms. This one happens to be a summer camp.
