A couple of years ago I found a website based on the recommendation of someone else in my industry. It was an inspirational movie from Simple Truths entitled "The Simple Truths of Service". I watched the 3 minute video about Johnny the Bagger. Johnny worked at a supermarket and transformed the store by making the checkout experience memorable. I am not going to relate the story here--you can check it out from the link above. I was so impressed by that story that I became a customer of Simple Truths and have purchased a number of these books to give away. The story of Johnny the Bagger was so good that I did not even have to open the book, as I KNEW it would leave a lasting memory on any reader. And since in came with the DVD, it also could be watched.
Today, as I pulled out my copy of the book, to relive that story, in part because I have begun to give away that book in a new area, I noticed something inside. There was MORE than Johnny the Bagger's story in that book. There was Wally the Cabbie. There was Billy the car salesman. There was the fix-it man. And there were others. For two years, I had thought I knew the book. I thought I knew the story. I thought I knew the answers. When I only knew a PART of the whole. Johnny the Bagger is still the key element of the book. But there is much, much more. In a way, this is a gift that has kept on giving. And that is why it is important to open the package.
